I'm a huge asshole when it comes to music. I like a little bit of everything, but I hate most of most things. I'll start off my thread by listing my favorite ten albums, then I'll expand it over time to include favorite songs, musicians, etc. until this resembles a proper snob blog.
Top Ten Albums
1. I Am Anonymous - Headspace
This prog metal album comes straight from Britain's most talented musicians. Keyboardist Adam Wakeman conceived of the idea for a collaborative album while on tour with Ozzy Osbourne. He contacted some of the most talented musicians he knew, including Threshold vocalist Damian Wilson, Hot Leg guitarist Pete Rinaldi, bassist Lee Pomeroy and drummer Rick Brook, asking each if they wanted to be part of a musical experiment he dubbed "Anonymous." Because each of the members were involved in their separate careers, they didn't have time to sit down and write an album, so they instead worked individually on pieces of music that would later form the songs on the album. They would write a piece and send it to their comrades, slowly working them together over a span of two years until they had assembled a work of art. Every track on the album is exceptionally powerful and well-written, but the best pieces are arguably Fall of America and the album's closer, The Big Day. The concept album deals with the suffering caused by war and its toll on those involved.
2. Powerslave - Iron Maiden
Iron Maiden's 1984 release saw the creation of their definitive sound that would take them through the next decade and a half and would influence nearly all heavy metal released to date. Making heavy use of Steve Harris' galloping 16th-note bass style, Powerslave evokes an aggressive tone that is perfect for the pit. The album's tour is often cited as one of the greatest live acts of all time. Standout tracks include the two singles, Aces High and Two Minutes to Midnight, and the epic retelling of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
